Draft guidance

Live-animal shipping

This is a working note for keepers, not a carrier contract and not legal advice. The state table below is the live rule set from the admin panel.

Bug Barn is Australia-only. Listings, buyers, and deliveries stay inside Australia. International shipping is not offered.

Australia Post accepts only harmless live invertebrates, and only by Express Post. Pack the container so it cannot crush, leak, or open in a sorting belt. Animals need air, a little moisture, and something to grip. Don’t post on a Thursday if the parcel would sit over a weekend.

Label the outside in plain language, for example “Live harmless invertebrates”. Do not describe venomous animals as harmless. Venomous animals are not harmless. Do not send them by Australia Post. Use a lawful carrier, and leave the category off until that path is confirmed.

Bug Barn does not offer international shipping, export paperwork, or a freight forwarder. A listing that asks for a delivery outside Australia should be reported.

Where a parcel can go

  • New South Wales · openOpen for harmless invertebrates by Express Post, if the seller also ticks this state.
  • Victoria · openOpen for harmless invertebrates by Express Post, if the seller also ticks this state.
  • Queensland · openOpen for harmless invertebrates by Express Post, if the seller also ticks this state.
  • South Australia · openOpen for harmless invertebrates by Express Post, if the seller also ticks this state.
  • Western Australia · blockedWestern Australia is blocked. Live invertebrates generally need a permit to enter WA, so Bug Barn does not deliver there.
  • Tasmania · blockedTasmania is blocked. Island biosecurity rules are stricter, so Bug Barn does not deliver there.
  • Northern Territory · flaggedThe Northern Territory is flagged. Check local keeping and import rules before you buy or post animals there.
  • Australian Capital Territory · openOpen for harmless invertebrates by Express Post, if the seller also ticks this state.

Both gates have to pass: the admin rule for the buyer’s state, and the seller’s own ships-to list. If an admin blocks a state later, checkout stops offering it even if older listings still mention it.
